Do you know the trick to add a new line to an existing chart? No menu, no “Select Data” window: a simple copy-paste is enough 😀👍

The starting point: a chart already in place

Here are the daily temperatures in New York in 2020, with their line chart.

A new column to add to the chart

In column C, we have calculated a 10-day moving average with the formula =AVERAGE(B2:B11). Now we want to see it on the chart, next to the daily temperatures.

Column C with the 10-day moving average

The trick: copy, then paste on the chart

  1. Select the new column (here, column C).
  2. Copy it with Ctrl + C.
  3. Click the chart. Select the whole chart, not a specific part of it.
  4. Paste with Ctrl + V.

That’s all. The data in the column now appears as a new line on the chart.

The trick works with all the chart types: in a column chart, for example, the pasted data appears as a new series of columns.
