How to get Excel for free?
Excel for Free, it's possible 😃👍 It is called Excel Online. You can use it for free with a Microsoft account and a web browser
- Go to www.office.com
Alternatively, you can go to www.onedrive.com
- Connect with your Microsoft account
Login with a personal account or a professional account. We will explain the difference later in this article
- Select the Excel app from the left pane
Once connected, you can see the Excel icon in the left pane of your Office dashboard. Click on this icon.
- Work with Excel Online for free
And that's all! The browser display now a real workbook directly connected to your Microsoft account.
Is Excel Online Really Free?
Yes! If you see in the upper-right corner the text "Buy Microsoft 365", that means you are running a Free version of Excel. But it's not because it's a free version that you will use a version with very few options.
If you don't have this indication, you are using Excel Online with a subscription that has more features than the Free version.
What offers the free version of Excel Online
As you can see, on the previous image, the interface of Excel Online is similar to Excel desktop
- All the 520 formulas of Excel are available (except WEBSERVICE and CELL)

Where is saved my workbook?
- When working with Excel Online, the system constantly saves your workbook. It immediately saves any modification, such as a decimal, a letter in a cell, or the format.
- Your workbook is automatically save at the root of your OneDrive folder
- But you can save your Excel file with a custom name, in a custom folder.
Sharing and Collaboration
- ExcelOnline excels in collaborative features.
- You can easily share your documents by clicking on the ‘Share’ button and entering the email addresses of your collaborators.
- They can then access and co-edit the document in real-time, with changes visible instantly.
Features available only with Excel Online
Excel Online also serves as a platform for the latest updates to Excel. Many new features are first introduced in Excel Online before being added to Excel 365 desktop. For example, the new Excel UI is currently only available in Excel Online.
If you want to use Excel and don't pay for a license, it's the solution you have and for free.
