Do you know that you can do calculations in Excel without using the equal sign?

People love calculators 😍

I've always found it amusing to see a calculator stationed next to a computer. I mean, come on, we've got Excel right there 😉

But, one day, a secretary told me one day "I'm fed up with starting a formula with ="

Change one Excel option to avoid using the equal sign

There is a way to do calculations without the equal sign in Excel

  1. Go in the menu Files>Options>Advanced
  2. Scroll down until you reach the end of the options
  3. In the section Lotus compatibility setting, check Transition formula entry.

What happens now in Excel?

Now, when you perform a calculation, Excel will add for you the symbol equal and display the result of your calculation 😯😯😯

Important: this option is not permanent.

When you close Excel, you must reactivate this option to avoid starting your calculation with equal.

Also, this option does not apply to all the worksheets in your workbook. In fact, you have to select the worksheet where you want to activate it.

Let's be honest, this is a nice trick to show to your friend, but DON'T work like that with Excel. Starting your calculations with the equal sign is like a trade mark "I'm doing a calculation". You know it, Excel knows it and everyone who will update your document knows it.
